General documentation tips. Cover depends on your policy wording, and some policies set minimum lock standards for entry doors.

After a break-in

• Report it to the police and keep the crime reference number.
• Photograph forced doors, frames, windows and locks before anything is repaired.
• Keep receipts for emergency boarding, lock changes and anything you replace.

Lock requirements

Many home insurance policies ask for locks to BS 3621 on final exit doors and key-operated locks on accessible windows. Check your policy wording before choosing a lock.

Claim

Notify your insurer as your policy requires. A locksmith can describe the damage and the work done; they do not replace your claim or give legal advice.
